Bush-McCain Challenge in St. Louis

Bumped from the diaries. Great to see it was a success. Did anyone else get out to a Bush-McCain challenge yesterday? - Todd

Yesterday, in conjunction with over 300 other cities, St. Louis's MoveOn Council hosted a Bush-McCain Challenge table on the Delmar Loop in St. Louis.  I wasn't sure what to expect (some people had expressed trepidation about the action being to "gimmicky"), but it turned out to be a really great event.  Volunteers and the public had a lot of fun with the challenge.  And people were really shocked when they heard things like "McCain received a zero percent rating from the league of conservation voters on his record last year", or "McCain voted against a proposal to ban water boarding."  I left wishing that we could do this event much more often.
(more below the fold)

Some of the more tangible measures of the events' success:

We signed almost 20 people up to moveon.org's email list in only 2 hours.

About five of the people who volunteered said that they would be willing to be on the St. Louis MoveOn council, a group that meets a couple times a month to plan and host events.

The public was very engaged.

We got some nice coverage from pubdef.net (see below).

Even though we didn't get coverage from the mainstream media, we had an opportunity in our press calls and sending of releases to educate them about McCain, to keep planting (or maybe we're at the watering stage) the seed that McCain's not quite the "maverick" he pretends to be.

**

I left wondering if we could get twenty people to sign up in only two hours, how many people could we get to sign up if we had a presence on the Loop five days a week?   The Loop is a place with pretty high traffic turnover, so I don't think we'd see all the same people very often, even if we did the event over the course of months.   And how much of a difference would it make to be able to get hundreds of new people signed up for MoveOn's lists?

Perhaps this gets a little lost in the extended primary fight, but it feels like we're at a place where we're no longer swimming against the tide, and that the work we do pays pretty impressive dividends.  Hopefully, we can take advantage of this opportunity to make some permanent progress.

Also, I'd like to note that MoveOn.org makes it really easy to put on successful events.  I'd really encourage people to look into getting more involved in their local MoveOn councils .

Last but not least, here's a nice video put together by pubdef.net; you can see their full coverage at http://www.pubdef.net/2008/05/29/bush-mc cain-challenge-comes-to-st-louis/#commen t-18139

I'm part of the Venice, CA council of Moveon and I knew that when people learned more about how in lockstep McSame is with Bush we're going to do well.  Good Job in St. Louis!

That's exactly right.

To be clear, I am an Issue Independent, but I believe many of the Left topics that have been bulldozed in recent years need to come back to the surface.  Now is the time for the Left to make progress and my advice is to do it down the middle.  Many like me in the Center will support reasoned Left arguments, many from the Right as well - but nothing turns people off like "Now's our turn, suckers!".

Good on you for going out and being heard!

Interestingly, in relation to the quote you blocked off, our local Jobs with Justice set up a meeting between AFL-CIO organizing director Stuart Acuff and local "young activists" tonight, and he basically said the same thing.  He said, roughly, that anything you do over the next year will have a huge payoff.  It's an exciting time to be an activist!

yeah, it's really a remarkably easy way to build large lists of people in a short amount of time.  I hope you can convince them!

I'm so sick I missed it! (2.00 / 2)

Sick kid today!

We need to have something like that out further west - St. Charles, Wentzville, Jefferson, etc.  These folks are the ones needing some convincing and conversion.  The folks at the loop are likely already progressive given the Wash. U campus influence and all.

Glad it went well though.  Really excited to see the message getting out and others in the party who have moved past the bickering and on to defining McSame for what he is.

Yeah, the Loop is really a perfect place... (2.00 / 1)

It's liberal enough where you feel like you're in friendly territory, but it's also got a high number of visitors so you interact with people across the political spectrum.

Now you (not you personally but "you")  might think that this event is only effective when it reaches independents, but from doing the event I think it actually is effective even with people who identify as liberals.  Many of them vaguely knew they didn't like McCain, but the Challenge gave them some very concrete reasons for not liking him, which I think will make them much less vulnerable to his future trying-to-appear-moderate talking points.

Question... (2.00 / 1)

I'll check my email as I'm sure there's something buried ther, but does anyone know if this was just a one day event?

How can I find out how to join in other events here in MO or other cities?

If you haven't already, (2.00 / 1)

definitely sign up at http://www.operationdemocracy.org/team/? id=12746-6437081-JboBxC&t=10 .  This should put you on your local moveon council (if you're in St. Louis; I'm not sure what happens if you live in, say, St. Charles, since they currently don't have an active council).  If you could put something in the notes about finding out about this from mydd that would help us to know who you are.  From there you should be able to hear about all of the upcoming events, and could even have an opportunity to further develop the council if you so choose.

This was a one-day event in the sense that MoveOn will only put their full email resources behind the event for this month on May 28.  Now, if you can hook up with a few other council members, there's nothing stopping you from doing the Bush/McCain challenge whenever and wherever you want; you just won't be able to use the full email list to do so.  There will be more "full email" events in June.

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't invite you to this St. Louis-area blogger picnic. Hope to see you there!

John McCain loves NAFTA?  You mean the John McCain running for president, John McCain?  I knew I didn't like John McCain.

Add to your sig something about this McCain  who supported the SCHIP veto.  That way every one of your comments will have some effect towards getting better articles about McCain into the public's eye.

Wow, thanks for this!
My Dad is a Republican and supports John McCain, because he's a Navy vet (like my dad), but I think it's more of a knee jerk support, as he also likes Obama and hates the war.
These articles might help to change his mind.

This is a great idea! (none / 0)

I never thought of a Senate candidate (or shoe-in) doing it, but I was thinking that participating in the challenge would be a really cool way for downticket Democrats to get some publicity (and increase the likelihood of media coverage for the event).  If you're a  Democrat in a tough state House or Senate Race, why not get some street credibility by showing that you oppose Mr. 70% and his twin?  In other words, does MoveOn have coattails?
